Servicing book?

Does anyone know whether there are rules and regs about who is aloud to stamp a service book. For example, if you buy a car from say a one man band who sells cars and they stamp the service book instead of the garage who carried out the service, is this right/wrong doesn't matter?

I've posted a few questions but people have been most helpful, many thanks

Kelly, I've really no idea where this info can be sought...however before you complain to your garage (if that is your intention) you need to be aware of what sort of service your car was needing at a specific mileage....for example, if you booked your car in for a 2 year or 20,000 mile service, the manufacturer will stipulate what needs to be done - which won't necessarily include everything. I've had a new type Clio in today - (18000 miles), the punter said 'did I change the fuel filter' I said no because Renault say its not required until 36000 miles. Get my drift? Cheers John

Thanks for answering my question - do you know where this info might be printed on the web? I've a stamp in my book from a car dealer for a service (obviously), but a full service was not carried out by the mechanics garage!

Its only a qualified and registered garage who is legally entitled to stamp the service book (it doesn't have to be a main dealer though). However, random stamping happens all of the time and its only if a warranty claim is pending that people ask questions. A car trader really isn't qualified to do this unless competent work has been carried out.
