VHS to DVD finalizing disc?

I want to transfer all my VHSs to DVD. I connected the 2 machines together, pressed play on the VHS and record on the DVD recorder. However, when I tried to play back the DVD on another DVD player, I got the message 'cannot play this type of disc'. Do I have to finalize the DVD and if so, where and how?
