I HAVE JUST FITTED A SECOND HAND AUTOMATIC GEARBOX TO MY 1998 RENAULT ESPACE 2.0 PETROL, I HAVE PUT 4.5 LITRES OF ATF OIL IN AS DIRECTED, THE CAR WILL DRIVE BACKWARDS WITH NO PROBLEM BUT WHEN YOU DRIVE FORWARD IT SEEMS TO SLIP. ANY IDEAS??
hi i have a problem when cold my gears changed up and down then i get a light come on like a hart beat monitor then my gear box seems to be stuck in 4th or 5th gear only happens when warm any ideas thank you

I have repaired the gearbox at long last. I, with help, took the gearbox out and noted that on taking it apart, the clutch plates had no meat on it. Replaced the clutch plates and spacers and put back together.
Works a treat and so much better than paying £1600 for a new one or £1200 for recon and £800 for it to be repaired. Reepair cost, £220. (and a days labour)

relating to the ad4, I also have the same gearbox in my 3L v6 laguna witht the same problem. Is the piston repairable? If so, is the part available, if so, from whome? Many thanx

This is a common problem with the AD4/AR4 auto gearboxes used in the 1990s. The rubber seal on the piston used to engage 1&2 gear breaks causes a lose in hydraulic pressure causing it to slip. Unfortuntely it means opening up the gearbox and replacing the piston. This is the main reason why a lot of these autos get scrapped so getting a 2nd hand box is always risky.
