Mend Fiat Punto Engine 2001

Fiat Punto Mk2, 8Valve engine miss-fire?

My 2001 (51 plate) punto 8V engined car has suddenly started to miss-fire, ie cylinders 2 & 3 fire but 1 & 4 won't. Easy I thought, replace the duff coil. Did that, no difference, swapped the 2 coils around - still no difference. Shuffled various permitations of the 3 coils (includes replacement one) no difference. No spark at 1 & 4 cylinders. Haynes manual wiring diagram does not provide information on these circuits. Litle engine light on dashboard glows constantly. Checked engine management fuses, OK... so HELP!...

All thats gone is the driver transistor on the ecu which is soldered onto the circuit board (output driver transistor). It will cost you £0.69 if you know a handy electronics nerd.

Hi
My fiat punto has been misfiring and I have ran a diagnostic on the car which give the following 3 codes:
P0300 - Engine Misfire detected,
P0351 - Ignition coil 1 control circuit
P0352 - coil 2 control circuit.
So I bought new coil packs and the problem has been getting worse. I have been told that its the ECU, so i bought a new self programmable ECU and changed it over, but now my car does not want to start it just does not want to tick over, i can hear the hum when i turn the ignition. So i decided to put the old ECU back in and i still have the same problem - the car does not start.

Please help as i am car-less......

Thanks

Hi mate! You need a new ECU!
Very common fault on these cars!
If you need one contact Hale Motors 0161 477 0800 and they will talk you through it and how to cancel the light as it will flash when you replace it!
Its called sonic wheel setup!
Thats your only way Thanks Rick

will fitting a new ecu cure the missfire even if u dont reprogram it ?

this is a common fault on the punto. i would suggest your ECU is at fault, cheepest fix would be to send your ECU and get it reprogrammed which would cost about £100 compared to a garage fixing it at £500. Hope this helps.

Think it may be an ECU fault, common mk 2 Punto prob. Even though fault code/codes point to coil pack.
May be cheaper to buy a recon/second hand ECU & second-hand lock set, as the lock set need reprogramming into the new ECU.
May be worth contacting a Fiat breaker specialist & asking for advice.
I have came across this prob once before, used my OBD 2 code reader on my mechanic mates mk2 Punto. Fault code came back as a coil pack fault. He did the same as you, swapped & changed them over. Prob continued. He then rang up a Fiat car breaker specialist. Think in the end he change ECU & ignition & door locks, to keep the same key to fit all locks. Can't remember exactly, but think breakers charged him around £200-£300 (all in parts & labour).
Hope this helps?

Hi, the other thing you can try if you have a multimeter preferably with a digital readout(AVO) is measure the resistance of the coils, across pins 1&2 (power in plug) should be 0.49 > 0.6 ohms, and between the two HT outputs is should be 6660 > 8140 ohms

Hi, this info from the autodata manual Black/grey wire from pin A 10 (ECU)supplies the earth for coil 1 pin 2 (cylinders 2&3) brown/black wire from pin A 38 (ECU)goes to coil 2 pin 2 (cylinders 1&4) the 12v(fuse 22, 20amp) supply for the coils is on pin 1 of the coils brown/white.

As you look at the ECU from the wire side of the connectors plug A is on the left there are four rows of pins and they number from left to right top row 1>10 then 11>19, 20>28 and bottom row 29>38 the other thing you should do is get a diagnostic readout to clear the fault light
