problems with Singer model 418?

I hadn`t used the machine for 15 months, but now find that either the needle thread snaps after a few stitches, or the bobbin gets all tangled and sucks the fabric in. We have had a good look, but can`t see anything wrong. I also took all the steps suggested in the machine manual. Any advice please?

Make sure you have the tensions set properly to begine with, do you have the metal bobbin case or the plastic bobbin case known as apollo? email me below if you can.
