If the battery light stays on your battery is not recieving charge from the alternator. if the light stays on but your battery does not go flat it is prob the diode pack. a new alternator will fix the problem. if the battery does go flat, it might be worth checking your alternator drive belt for tension. odd are a new alternator is required.
