my dell laptop ?

screen works in safe mode but once windows xp kicks in it only works on the monitor and not the laptops screen.

This could be because the screen resolution is too high for your laptop screen. try going into safe mode and reducing the resolution to the lowest setting. reboot and then in xp change the resolution to desired resolution.
