Inglis Direct Drive - metalic noise during spin cycle ?

All systems go through all cycles except for spin. Here the tub gets up to full speed then there is an intermintent clanking noise as if something is catching or releasing then grabing again. It seems as if the tub spin rate slows a little when this happens, then picks up again and the noise repeats. It is very loud and gives you that feeling that something is very wrong. I have the maching apart and looked at the various parts but cannot see anything broken. I suspect it may be the brake driver cam not holding. Any advise or similar situation solutions would sure help me fix this. Thanks Don
