How do I fix the timeing on a singer 288?

My singer model number is 288 it is about 20 yrs old. I do not want to buy a new one, because this one is made out of the good stuff. I am pretty sure it is a timing problem, when you turn the wheel the needle goes through the hole, and the hits medal. That is what it sounds like and looks like. I have fixed many things on this machine, but never that and I can not find any help my just searching
