When I flush the tiolet and the water fills back up, why won't it stop until it's to late? The water will shut off, but only after the water is already overflowing. It is an older tiolet.
If you can Marian, bend the arm down on the ball valve if it is brass. If it is a plastic ball valve, there may be some adjusting nuts to lower the water level. let me know how you get on by emailing me on aocplumbingandheating@btinternet.com

sounds to me like the rubber flapper is letting water into the toilet before the tank is full. The flapper is suppost to be water tight untill you flush. Remove the rubber flapper should be easy enough just take a good luck at it before taking it off then bring it to your local hardwear store and match it. Only a few bucks$$ Good Luck happy flushing

You possably have a bad in tank water cut off flap or the ball that rises is misadjusted ....can buy new complete kit @ homedepot or local hardware store for practically nothing.
It also comes with directions on how to install
