We have a smeg DW164.1 our on/off button does not stay down hence we cannot programme the washer. We can hold it down manually and the programme lights come on, but when we release the switch they all go out! Can we fix it ourselves, or do we have to call in an engineer? (which we can ill afford)

I´d just like to thank you!!! I have been dishwasherless for 3 months now and, lacking money for a repair man (Thank goodness!!) found this advice online. I´ve just done the reset and now have water running through my dishwasher again!!!! Thanks a million!!

you cant repair this fault as the circuit board has failed and is totally useless. The only way to rectify this is to replace the board,the cheapest price is from E spares at about £153, the factory reset wont work with this problem as the program memory has been erased due to the failure of the main board in the control unit. It's a common fault on smeg dishwashers that are over 4 years old.

My SMEG dishwasher does not seem to be running water. It is as if it is blocked but I have looked everywhere, I think. It runs the circle but no water is let through. Can anyone advise me? Thanks

My smeg dishwasher (about 8 years old) has stopped working . No functrion lights working. after the last wash about an inch of water was left in the machine .Hanve checked the drain sieve in the machine and the main electric fuse box both of these are O.K
Any suggestions can you give me the name of someone to look at it for me I am 80 years of age and need advice?help

I had the engineer out today and he didn't know the problem either, but he called me back to say that the error is probably because of a power surge (or cut) that has tripped the circuit board which resets it to the factory settings. To rectify this you need to reset the circuit board by using the following sequence:
-turn machine power off using the on/off switch
-turn machine power back on using the on/off switch..then press the function button 4 times within 3 seconds.
-if successfull this should light the outside 2 lights (lights 1 & 5)
-press the function button once more and turn machine power off again using the on/off switch....leave for 20 sec.
-turn power back on and settings should be back to normal.

You need to look in the manual. In the section dealing with malfunctions, you will find a table showing you what the lights mean. They report an error that you can look up on the list. I have a smeg dwi710e but the error codes are not the same.

Best add to this posting what the model number is, that way other people may be better informed to help.
