Mend Hotpoint Tumble Dryer Shaft

How can I fix my Hotpoint Condenser Dryer dial?

My dial goes round but does not seem to connect. It just goes round and round.

I thought it was the dial as there was a small crack in the shaft but have ordered a new one and the problem is still there.
