16gb flash drive?

Hi I have a new 16gb flash drive, which is recognised on my laptop in the USB port, but it thinks it is a new disk drive and asks me to insert a disk! there is nothing on the flash drive at all, and i have tried to format, use the usual flash drive driver etc. but no joy. the computer runs on XP and recognises other flash drives without any problem
