My GE Microwave shows a fault code ( F-3 ) how do I clear this?

the ribbon connector was my problem on my GE microwave (PVM1970SR1SS - model not made anymore).
The microwave error was "short circuit keyboard" without any F errors as mentioned below. I simply removed the thin strip from inside the circuit board and cleaned with rubbing alcohol and allowed to dry. Once all wires and ribbon were replaced into the sockets the microwave worked well

I took off the panel, cleaned the ribbon cable end with P600 sandpaper, and then alcohol, put everything back, and it worked perfectly. None of the panel worked before, and the last message I had previously was about a shorted key pad. Now everything fine.

I took my key panel off and sprayed all the components and inside of pad with contact cleaner. I let it dry over night then reinstalled it the next day. Works perfect so far, been two weeks

I totally jammed up the display on the microwave by cleaning it and getting it wet inside (I didn't know what I did wrong until I read this thread.) The hair dryer fix just totally worked for me! I just undid the 3 screws from the top vent and blew the hair dryer in there and also through the vent holes inside the microwave. It only took 5 minutes. Thanks so much to this forum!

OK I'm going to go to this forum from now on. I went home and tried the hair dryer after taking the panel down and wiping out any grease and gunk then put the hair dryer on medium and blew it for a few minutes then I put everything back and plugged it in and it's working again. Wow!! I really did not have any money to call a repair man . Thanks so much for the help.

My GE Spacesaver microwave just stopped working was beeping then I have F3 Code buttons do not work I will go home and try to revive it with my blowdryer. Wish me luck. It's a shame how much they charge for a simple repair I'm praying this is my quick fix because I don't have any $ to have it repaired.

Our GE Over the Range Microwave Oven-Hood JVM 1540 SMC was making constant beeping sounds and displayed "Keypad shorted - may require service". I followed David's procedure and it worked!

Also, to clean the trapped (brown) grease, I used paper towels with alcohol.

My GE Over the Range Microwave HVM1540 keypad was showing "Keypad shorted - may require service" and making loud and constant beeping. This was right after house cleaners came. I tried the advice on this forum and it worked great. However, it was unplugged for about a week while I was trying to figure out what to do, so possibly any water that got inside had already evaporated by itself.

Here is what I did (maybe overkill, since others had good results doing much less):
1. Unscrewed the top two screws to remove the vent
2. Unscrewed one more screw to swing down the keypad panel
3. Gently disconnected all the connections from the circuit board so i could take down the whole keypad panel
4. Unscrewed 4 screws to remove the circuit board
5. Removed the metal pan behind the circuit board - it is held in with 4 plastic snaps, so getting it out was fairly difficult. Everything looked quite clean inside.
6. Used hairdryer for 2 minutes on the back and front of the plastic panel.
7. Put everything back the same way.
8. Microwave is working great now. Saved hundreds of dollars.

The hairdryer trick worked perfectly. I want to add I did NOT have to remove the whole space maker microwave from the wall. You remove the vent looking thing from the top with the two tiny phllips screws. The one screw releases the control panel and you can fold it down. Then, go crazy with the hair dryer. Put it back together and voila. Elapsed time 10 minutes.

Thanks to this blog I was able to pull off the keypad "sticker" and blow dry the inside. My husband is thankful that I saved a service call. What he doesn't know is that I most likely caused the problem by cleaning the outside of the microwave with Windex ;)

Thank you all so much for saving me time and money.
I was able to pull the microwave front panel sticker off. I removed it 90%. Blow dried the front panel and inside the microwave wall closest to the front panel. 5 minutes of drying the panel with hot air. plugged the microwave back and working perfectly. Hope this helps everyone else and thank you again. GE helpline not willing to help and wanted $100 for diagnosis plus parts and labor. It's a shame that companies can't help customers when they sell them billions in appliances but no help line.

Hey guys...Several of the important buttons on our Spacemaker stopped working right now, coincidentally right after we had new housekeepers clean the house. I suspect they sprayed cleaning solution that got into the little holes on the right inside wall of the microwave. The buttons that don't work are 4, 5, 7, 8 on the keypad + maybe one or two others. Do you think the tricks mentioned on this thread might work for us? I'd love to fix & not have to ask the cleaners to pay for what will likely be a very expensive repair or replace!

I have an in-wall unit that was giving me an F3 error code. I took the cover off the unit, unplugged the ribbon cable for the touch pad's smart board, cleaned it with a pencil eraser, and plugged it back in and presto! Works like a new unit. So, before you buy a smart board for $123, try this first.

Holy moly, this actually worked! I was nervous about pulling off the keypad--didn't realize until I read another poster here that it was just a glued on panel. I had to pry it up with a butter knife at the edge to get it started. Who knew?

This has happened to me several times, and I always just waited a few days (or even weeks) and it would magically start working again. So I guess moisture accumulates somewhere--and a blow dryer accelerates the drying process? Glad to know I won't have to live without my microwave while I wait for it to dry out anymore! Just keep the hair dryer handy, because it likely WILL happen again.

Had the same symptoms but found that the pins coming from the fluoroescent display were gummed up. Cleaned them with alcohol (above and below - the display can pivot up from the board), reassembled, and the unit worked again! Also swabbed the traces on the board in case any grease was causing a short.

We are the latest ones to benefit from the collective wisdom of the group. Had a "Service may be needed - Keypad shorted" message on GE microwave JES1451. Used a hair dryer on the keypad, around front edges of unit, and blown into vents inside microwave. Unit started up and displayed FRZ VEG msg. I pushed several buttons on the keypad until the SET CLOCK msg appeared. Set the clock and made popcorn! :) Thanks, everyone for your suggestions!

This really worked. I removed the front keypad and unplugged the wires. Then I wiped the harness with a baby wipe. Blow dried the front key pad and the back for 1 minute and walla. Plugged everything up and it worked.

So excited! This worked for me. I didnt want to pay $80+ for a part not even counting a $100 service fee. I can't tell you how easy this was. Took the vent cover off, unscrewed 1 screw at top of panel, blow dryed back of panel and front of panel approx 3 minutes each, plugged in microwave and it worked!!!!!
This only took me about 8 minutes to fix.

I was getting ready to toss my 2 year old GE microwave for the same shorted keypad problem and I am glad I found this forum. The only problem I had with the solution, was that I didn't realize that the keypad was just glued on the front of the panel and was just a sheet of plastic. I had seen someone mention a screw, so I was looking for a way to find a screw without completely taking the thing apart. I finally figured it out and now it works fine. Thank you

I unplugged the microwave from power. Followed directions found here. Removed the two screws to take off top grill. Removed top single center screw and pulled the touch panel down holding on both sides to remove it. Checked all connections, then lifted both sides of white lock holding ribbon to circuit board, which frees the ribbon. Wiped entire ribbon with alcohol wipe, then reinserted ribbon as far as it would go and locked it down. Made certain ribbon is pressed all the way into circuit by applying continued pressure while locking it.

My Spacemaker Model JEM31WF001 has a key pad that does not seem removable with single screw as other models. I did get the F3 error problem to clear up (so far so good) by blowing hot air from hair drier into the door latch openings and lamp grill inside the oven.

Just follow the steps in cleaning the control panel. Unplugging/replugging/wiping down all connectors including the flat tape like connector strip restored function for me. (The strip pulls out of the white plastic connector by gently sliding up the top of the connector).

blow dryer trick worked on "keypad short -- may need repair" fault. remove panel by first removing vent grill that runs along top of microwave. usually held on by clips or screws inside. the vent grill hides a single screw that holds the control panel. once screw is removed, panel tilts out and down.

7) Use hairdryer to dry remaining leftover moisture
8) Replace keypad, plug in microwave and you're off and running!

Root cause: Moisture and crud builds up on the harness which essentially shorts the circuit. Cleaning it fixes the problem (while you're in there you may want to clean the other surfaces that have accrued crud and moisture build-up.

I had the F3 error. I pulled the touchpad panel off and just unpluged and repluged all connections after cleaning the ribbon cable and I am back in business.

I don't have an answer. I've tried the hair blower on the front of the key pad and then in the back after I had disembled the control panel. I cleaned off the harness as suggested and then blowed dried it. None of this works.
My GE spacemaker is 12 years old and the key pad is no longer made by GE I discovered so if I paid $99 for a GE service person to come out, he wouldn't be able to repair it.
Guess it's it time to buy a new microwave... these touchpads aren't robust enough to last the 41 years we've gotten out of our GE washers and dryers.

Wow! I had a similar problem (shorted steam sensor)and was skeptical about the use of the hair dryer repair suggested. I dropped the control panel and all I did was apply the air on the back of the panel. Lo and behold, that solved the problem. Haven't had a problem since. Make sure you disconnect power before dropping the panel. I was about to spend at least $99 on a service call until I came across this fix.

Did the same as above on my GE Spacemaker XL1400!! Worked like a charm. Removed the vent, one screw above the control panel, then unhooked wiring. Next I took off the plastic surround on the panel and heated the plastic cover then I tried to remove, BUT the metal backing on the button cover was wrapped around the circuit board. So I trimmed the edge of so that I could remove the cover NOT CUTTING ANY OF CIRCUIT BOARD. Then I cleaned with alcohol, put back together and VIOLA!!! I'm nukin again!!!

My wife spilled some cleaning liquid on top of the microwave. and Pannel stopped working. Later, It shows the F3 code on screen.

i have had this happen before! wait a day. then try pushing buttons. i pushed the popcorn button. i was making popcorn. try to let the popcorn pop. if the popcorn doesnt pop...u need to call a company to fix it. if your popcorn does pop..and it burns..keep trying. thats what i did.

Awesome! The hair dryer trick worked great! My husband didn't know what to think when I told him I might be able to fix the microwave but needed to borrow a hair dryer. Then when he saw what I was doing, he reminded me I could have done the heating and drying with my embossing heat gun. We could have had our microwave back a couple of weeks ago. Oh well! The blowdryer method worked! I held the blowdryer in the corner of the keypad then slowly moved it down as I peeled it. I then took a sponge with the tiniest bit of dish soap and ran it over both the sticky part (back of the circuits) and the place it was stuck to. Blowdryed this til touchably dry and then reapplied the kaypad face. Wait about 10 minutes until you plug in again for it to cool off. It then worked!!!!

it worked for us. you can get access to the panel by first removing the top grill and then unscrew the top of the control panel. there is a strip that looks like tape which attaches to the control panel which you need to wipe off and then blow dry. may not work the first time but be patient. also clean the bottom of the door and the latches to make sure the connection is clean.

I tried the blowdryer trick too and that totally worked. unplug the microwave, use the blowdryer to help remove the keypad, then use a little soap and water to clean both sides of the keypad and then blowdry it dry and restick the keypad back on. Give it a few minutes and plug the microwave back in and it should work.... It took me 4 tries, so be patient, but it will work for sure!

Indeed, same problem with our G.E. JES1238WH001.

Hubby ran the blow dryer over the keyboard panel,
lifted the 'sticker' up and blew the dust off the keys. Don't take the entire sticker off, though.

Plugged it back in, presto.

Thanks to this website I was able to fix my ge JVM1660sh - with the fault code of F3 which gives a 3 beep signal every few minutes (which will drive you crazy) and locks all button functions......the hairdryer trick worked within a minute. I unpluged the unit, cleaned the keypad with soap and water and then put a hair dryer about 3 inches away from the keypad on high for a minute.

Since this unit is only 4 years old and discontinued by ge - this site saved me from purchasing another unit.

After many attempts to reset the microwave I read the blog and tried the hair dryer fix. I simply heated up the external membrane to lift it up and then heated the entire touch pad surface for about 2 minutes with a hair dryer. "IT WORKED" AND I SAVED A REPAIR CALL AND POSSIBLY A TOUCH PAD THAT I DIDN'T NEED.

This happened to me today after I cleaned the key pad with a lot of soap and water. I was able to clear it by shutting off the power (circuit breaker) and then simply drying the key pad (even though it already seemed pretty dry). After waiting a few hours, I restored the power and the key pad worked again.
This makes sense if you consider that F3 means a short circuit, which in this case was caused by some water being where it shouldn't.
