how can i fix my original car altenator on my 94 cadillac seville sls?

my altenator just went out on my car and i was wondering is there any possible way that i can fix the altenator myself. i'm somewhat mechanically literate. so what materials do i need and what steps do i take. by the way the car is a 94 cadillac seville sls.

Most of the time its the voltage regulator but ya never know with these rascals .....in the long run its just about as good to replace with a rebuilt alt.
