Hi above is the best possible assessment of your quandry ( wrong usb cable or fitted wrong way round ) BUT why not buy a multi card reader -their usb cable is nearly allways standard industry wide ( your printer usb lead will probably be the same ) they are cheap and very versitile ( you can read / view / print from various cards

I take it we are talking 'New christmas present camera if so and download and viewing cables came with it together with the download software and instructions CD.
Now if this is correct then no doubt you fitted the wrong end of the USB in to the computer, the small end fits the camera but will only go in to the socket one way round. Same with the plug in to the computer USB socket, both are shaped to fit one way only.
If it didn't come with the camera and you've fitted it to the computer correctly then the cable is the wrong one and you should take both the lead and camera to a shop and ask what lead is needed, most computer shops hold USB leads. If you have no CD software then you might not be able to download but try anyway. Posting results would be helpful to others who may have same problem.
