Clutch problem?

My 1.9dti Laguna on a T plate has a problem with selecting gears. Release is very low on the pedal and both first and reverse very difficult to engage. What would the culprits be???

hello Raymond, ive never worked on your model but with previous experience i may be able to help you. firstly if your car has a clutch cable going to your gearbox try adjusting it with a spanner.(do this only if you are confident to do so) only tighten ever so slightly then try the pedal.if your car has a hydraulic clutch system you may have air in the system. you will need some clear tube (windscreen washer tube) a milk bottle,brake/clutch fluid and a assistant.first make sure your ignition is on then loosen the bleed nipple on the gearbox and attach the clear tube to the nipple end.fill the milk bottle with brake fluid and stick the other end of the tube into the milk bottle making sure that the end of the tube is completely submerged.loosen the nipple a little then have your friend pump the clutch pedal.if air bubbles can be seen keep pumping.check the brake/clutch reservoir to make sure the level is ok. once the bubbles have gone get your friend to press down on the pedal and tighten the nipple up then remove tube.try the pedal a few times to see if your gears engage smoothly.if this doesn't help maybe your clutch master cylinder, clutch assembly or gearbox is at fault. you should see professional advice and only try the above if you feel confident to do so. good luck.
