problems with mixer shower attachment?

The shower attachment on my bath has a ring to pull up for the water to come out of the shower and when pulled down thw water comes out of the bath tap. this is not working and no water comes out of the shower. A plumber has told me that a new tap is required to correct this . Does anyone know if it is possible to take the tap apart and fix it rather having having an expensive piece of plumbing done?
