battery problem?

while driving my battery light came on and wont go off checked the alternater belt and and it seemed fine now it wont start the battery is dead what could it be it is a h reg nissan primera ls 5 door hatchback 1597cc petrol 2-axle-rigid body

Looks like the alternator has quit charging ......will need to replace or rebuild the alternator
