The door comes apart easily... you need a small torx driver and a crosshead screwdriver. Pop the little cougar cap off the inside of the door and the plug lower down and undo the cross head screws underneath, then undo the small torx screw at the top inner edge (hinge side) of the door edge and the two screws on the outer edge. There is one more long torx screw on the inside of the door liner at the inner bottom through a little hole in the fluffy felt to remove, then just pull the door liner sharply at the bottom both sides till it pops free, then lift the door liner off the door and unhook it. The wires and door lock cable stop it going far but you can get to the relay or the speaker.

These relays (inside the plastic case) are very small and are better replaced with a chunky 30A industrial 12V DPDT relay wired into the existing timer circuit so the one touch drop still works. The relay costs about £2.50 and you can drill a hole in the top of the existing timer/relay casing, strip the old relay out, wire into its PCB connections and its done. All needs loads of waterproofing/tape after though, it gets wet inside the door!

How do you get to the relay in the drivers door?

Mine was cured by re-soldering the joints on the relay. I also found http://www.newcougar.org/forums/how-tos/122039-power-window-relay-fixable.html very helpful.

One extra bit of info is that there is a concertina rubber seal between the relay and its socket. The seal on mine had somehow become compressed at the bottom of the socket so the cantacts could not be pushed fully home, giving the impression the repair had failed. I found this out when I tried the 'bare' relay (i.e.removed from its case) (to confirm it was definitely the relay failing and not the motor or switch) and the relay worked, but failed when cased. Thats when I found the compressed seal and eased it back into place with a very small screwdiver.

Cost of the repair was zero.

it is the relay inside the door panel
take it out of the housing and you'll find that a small part of the solder has come loose on one of the pins
solder it back into place and thats it!
saves you £45.00
should only take about half an hour
