Hi there if you have not got a wiring fault or water ingress somewhere,causing this fault ,yes its possable the unit you are talking about could be faulty ,the unit is also known as a uch which is the main body computer ,also it will have to be configured to the vehicle,and as you say it will not be cheap hope this helps .
