The shower was fully working until recently and then the water began emerging from the small pipe at the base of the unit and small amount of water from head?

You need to replace the pressure releif device (PRD) which is only available from Triton. I know the part costs more than a few pence but it's better to try this before buying a new shower. When you replace the PRD make sure the sprayhead is clean and there is no obstruction/kink in the hose.
