My Mondeo had the same problem and I found the cooling fan was cutting in rather late ie: only when very hot. I had the heat exchanger [bit that switches the fan on] changed and no problem after. If you haven't got a workshop manual phone you library some do have manuals and look up cooling faults on yours or a similar vehicle, the advice/fault finding is much the same.=.
