How to locate the main shut -off to do repairs?

Not being able to locate the stop-cock or meter box won't necessarily prevent you fixing a leak within the house.
Plumbers have pipe freezing kits and pipe squeezing tools (for polyethylene pipes). They can use these to stop the flow upstream from the repair.
