washer acting up?

my washer will fill up then it stops and i have to turn the knob to get it to wash then it drains the water out and starts to spin the water out then stops and strats to fill up to rinse drains then spins out the water and stops what is wrong i haveput a $117.00 timer on it what could be wrong??
