Mend Visioneer 4400

How can I fix my Visioneer Scanner 4400?

I bought it from ebay and when it arrived there was a part loose - a strip of mirrored metal. I'm guessing it's essential as nothing is scanning, all just looks black. Is there anyway I can fix it back on to somewhere?
