update info on my sat nav?

I have a TomTom XL and i am trying to programme in a route but it keeps coming up waiting valid GPS signal. I have taken back to Halfords and they say I need to updagte it on the computer. I have gone onto the tomtom web and still cannot find where or how to do this any advice would be grateful

Install Tomtom home on your PC and connect your Sat Nav. Turn on your Sat Nav and when it asks to connect to your computer say yes. Tomtom home will then search to see if your Sat Nav requires any firmware upgrades and it will probably list an item called GPS fix. Say yes to updating and try your unit again. Hope this helps
