Mend Ideal Standard Toilet

Ideal Standard Toilet?

I have a dual flush ideal standard toilet that seems to be filling really slowly. I can't find out why as I can not get the lid off. Two questions, which bright spark decided it would be a good idea to 'lock' a cistern lid on and secondly how do I get it off?

Where can I find instructions or an Ideal Standard toilet? I can get lid off cistern and can see the problem is overflowing which is causing my toilet to give a small second flush once it has filled up but need help as to what to do next. Where do I turn water off (there isn't a pipe next to loo to turn on or off so it must be at back but which bit to turn off?) Also if I need to replace a valve how do I get everything out?! Got a bee in my bonnet that want to fix this myself so written instructions with diagrams would be good - can you help? Please!

How do I tighten the toilet seat without taking the whole cistern apart?

Our toilet seat has come lose and I can't get to the bolts to tighten it?

Is there an obvious way to repair this other than taking the whole toilet apart?

Hi BNR Smith,
Thank you so much for the advise regarding the dual ideal standard flush, it really worked. my flush was running water for atleast 10 mins after flushing(wasting water). i could not open it and the plumbers were asking 50 pound/hr and still not turning up. just googled and got your advise on opening the lid. once opened it took 2 mins to fix the excess water overflow prolem. there is a steel clip under the float cap which I had to pinch together and lower it, tried a few different levels and it is sorted.
thanks again
Thanks again

I have had the same problem, I looked for the internal parts, (to replace if needed), however I needed to take out the old ones, this because there are so many different ones and designs, (not very practical), I did cure the problem, inside is a small washer which I removed and lubricated with a bit of vasoline.

My cistern had stopped filling with water and of course I had no idea how to remove the lid so I could check what was going wrong. Thanks to your advice I removed the toilet lid and freed the mechanism which had come out of alinement You probably saved my over two hundered pounds in plumbing fees thanks guys

SimonJ,
I have the same problem and am also wondering what rocket scientist Ideal Standard hired to design their toilets. Checked www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk and this worked:

"If it is a dual flush one, so there will be one large button and one small one you remove it by pushing and holding down the large button whilst wiggling the smaller one. The smaller one will then pull out with your fingers then remove the bigger one.

There will then be a screw that needs removing before you can remove the outer ring or cistern lid.

The buttons have a little snib on the back of them and they need to be dislocated before they can be removed.

Once you have done it you will find it much easier the next time."

Don't know much about toilets generally but I have just fitted one for a customer, the chrome push button ring will probably unscrew so releasing the lid,you set the flow by altering the height of the rod that the button pushes down on(and is screwed to)take lid off play with the plunger and try again,I wouldn't worry about it being a bit slow this makes it quieter and what's the hurry.good luck.
