Magnet touched to screen discolored it?

We just tried the trick on our 4 year old Magnavox with built in dvd and vcr. It work it out until a small dull blue spot that is much less noticeable. The poles have to be the south points of the magnets as putting the north made it worst on our first try.

Nov 2010. still works. try turning your tv on and off. still didnt help. used to magnets taped to a spade bit in my cordless drill for 10 seconds....all fixed

My 5 year old son set a 4 stack of magnets on top of his tv over nite it was so badly discolored when we truned it on we were gonna toss it out. i tired the drill fix and it totally WORKED!!!!!! That just saved us at least $300.00 we would have spent on a new tv.

Tried the two magnets taped to the end of a drill, spin at high speed near tv while its on....all the colors went weird, but when i pulled the magnets away... the spot was gone...I was very surprised and pleased...thanks

The fix provided @ http://woil.ws/fixmonitor/ works great! I saved my 6 year old cousins behind the other night after he put a magnet on the center of our tv.

Ohhh, My God!!! I just tried a fix from another site I have to tell you all about. I read; if you strap the magnets to a drill and point it about an inch from the discolored spot, then spin at high speed it will fix the problem....Well it did!!! Wow!!! I was so impressed I screwed the TV up again just so I could fix it!!!

I wanted to thank you for the turning the set off then on, i touched my computer monitor with magents by mistake had them in my handed and pointed to something for my daughter DUUHH-- thought I would have to replace the monitor.. turned it off then back on... all set THANK YOU!

I checked this site out while searching how to fix my tv that my kid put a magnet to and made it all crazy green.turned it off and back on and it was fine,,,,,thanks so much

Also, if the TV's built-in degaussing circuit is unable to clear it an engineer can manually degauss the TV's shadowmask with a portable electromagnet designed for the purpose.

For that you shouldn't be charged much for the job, as it takes all of 10 seconds to do.

The worst scenario is..a very powerful magnet could in theory warp the shadow mask which would require a new cathode ray tube.

Most likely it will disappear with normal use.

If its not to bad then switching the TV on and off a few times should fix it or at least improve it. Most TV's these days do an automatic degauss when they are switched on. Some that I've seen have this function built in to a setup menu. Check through your user guide to if this is one of them.
