Mend Cash Register Machine

Gross Mechanical Cash Register (81378)?

I cannot understand how to make this machine work! The reset buttons work fine, the drawer opens, but the keys will not press down to enter sales. Is there a release button that needs to be triggered? Is there a manual available?

All suggestions welcomed!
