hi, Renault Grand Scenic 05, 7 seater.
I have replaced one bearing but the other identical bearing is slightly proud and won,t fit. Im not a mechanic so I would like to know if I have to shamfer down the hole and with what tool, thankyou

You need to replace the 2 bearings in the wiper arm with skateboard bearings (they're all the same size, the ABEC 5 thing only relates to speed - go to a skateboard shop or order online about £10 for 8). Smash out the old bearings with a suitable drift (a socket?). The bearing only comes in and goes out one way - theres a lip in the wiper arm on one side. Taking the pin, with the now stuck on inner bearing race, grind the inner bearing race open (don't worry if you damage the pin a bit) and crack the race off in a vice. Grind the castellated pin head down & chamfer it so that the new bearing can be fitted. Push new bearing into wiper arm squarley and tap in with a socket (or push it in with a vice) that only contacts the outer race of the bearing. Push the pin in using vice/G-clamp. Don't worry about the pin head being missing - it should be a tight enough fit. Done. It takes about a year for your driver side wiper to completely fail during use if you don't do this repair - how do I know that?.....;)

I have GrScenicII 2004, and I had the same problem.
I changed the wiper arm bearing (it is necessary to have a tools for removing arms from car.)
Bearings are like parts of arm rods and you have to file down the fixation metal (but some one need to be still there for back fixation)
I used bearing from old roller-skates wheel (ABEC5 was nice precise)

I have the same problem on renault scenic 7-seater.
03 model. It did not wipe centre of driver screen , problem from new. I assumed it was a warped window screen or design fault. Tried bending wiper arm, now 2 years later the arm bearing seems to be broken.

I have exactly the same fault with my 54 Grande Scenic. My wife took it back to the dealer, who fleeced hor for a new blade, wnich made no difference. They then 'tweaked' it out of her sight, and it worked a bit better for a while, but now it's getting worse again. I've tried bending the arm a bit, to try and get the middle of the blade to contact the screen, with varying degrees of success, but it's still not right. There does appear to be a lot of play at the foot of the wiper arm, so I suppose a new arm may be the only answer, if it can't be adjusted. Looks like a design fault as Ian L says. Let us know how you get on with Renault Customer Services.

OK, further my previous answer. I've now replaced the wiper arm with one I got from a breakers yard for a fiver (lucky me - it was his last one!) but what I did do before I fitted it, was compare it with the old one.

It looks as though what has happened is that the bearings in the arm have gone, which created the give for the spring in the arm to put pressure in the wrong place and bring the metal parts into contact with each other, thus wearing the arm away, creating more room for play, putting more pressure on the bearing. Basically a vicious circle. At some point, I would have thought the bearing would give completely and the whole arm fall apart!

In answer to the original question, can it be tightened up - If you have the same failure as me, then no, unless the bearing can be refurbished, but I still think your best bet is to get to a breakers yard and hope they have one in, else the main dealer will fleece you for a new one! BTW, I went to French Spares in Ranskill, nr Retford, Notts, only because it's local! Luckily they are a specialist Peugeot/Citroen/Renault breakers, so do get newer model cars with accident damage as opposed to the older end-of-life junked models!

Good luck
Tony

Same problem here on '03 Scenic. I've removed the wiper arm as per the Haynes manual and had a good look at it before refitting. It looks like over time, the metal-on-metal parts wear each other away creating enough give to stop the middle of the blade making good contact with the windscreen. A temporary fix I've found (as I know I need a new wiper arm!) is to bend the wiper arm so it creates enough pressure. This will exasperate the metal-on-metal wearing, but it's a fix until I can find a new wiper arm on the cheap - It's a very easy job to fit it yourself!

Don't know how to fix it, but my 05 Scenic has exactly the same problem. I doubt if out problemis isolated and it would seem like a 'design fault'. I am going to try a complaint to Renault Customer services. Garage have given a cost of £ 240.00 for a new wiper arm.
