The opening part of a double glazed window would not open easily-the handle seemed locked and I had to pull it over the fixed part of the window to close it, so I called in a window repair company. They said the hinges needed replacing and a new handle was needed, whilst this was being done they found that the locking mechanism on the under part of the window had broken so that also needed replacing. They also put new hinges on another window (draughty)and said these would stop the draughts as the new hinges would pull the windows in-faulty hinges were the most common problem producing draughts. For this they charged £55 per set of hinges,£15 for the handle and £45 for the locking mechanism +vat a total if almost £200!! Were they right or have I been diddled? HELP please as my husband is very angry and convinced we've been done.
it depends who you called,if its a big national company then the amount would be about right,I personally charge differantly and job would have cost around £125.00 as I charge parts plus hourly rate,also I am also in north east england and other parts of country charge a higher hourly rate so depends where you live, but you should have phoned round and got a few quotes first before you went ahead with job,but if jobs has been done right and it has stopped draughts and windows are now secure and working correctly then you have saved money rather than replacing full windows and also on energy bills
