Wiring on Singer 201-3?

Hello there,

I've just picked up a 201-3 with a Sew-Tric motor/light and the problem i have is that - when plugged in - the light will happily work, but as soon as you put your foot on the pedal the whole house shorts out!

I'm deffinitely no sparky, but have had a look inside the connector that plugs into the motor & things don't look right (Red & Black wires mixed, etc).

It's a three-pin connection and i'll be using it in the UK.

The two cables that lead into the connector (mains & foot pedal) have three wires each; red, black & green.

Both of the green (earth) wires are joined together, emerge through the top of the connector and are secured under a little metal plate.

As for the other wires, the red from the pedal lead connects to the first(left hand) pin, the black from the pedal lead & the red from the mains lead connect to the second (middle pin), and the black from the
mains lead connects to the third (right hand) pin.

What struck me as strange was the fact that there were live (red) and neutral (black) wires joined together on the middle pin.

Hope someone can advise if this is correct?

Cheers

Stuart

On singer three pin, mains lead is connected red/positive to first pin, black/negative to third pin. The foot pedal is then wired between third and center pin.
It then doesn't matter which way mains electric is connected because the pedal can work on either positive or negative side.
Only the third pin has two wires connected, one from mains supply and one to pedal.
Machine internal wiring is light between first and third pins for constant supply and motor between third and center pin for pedal control.
Old sew-tric four pins also had an earth connection.

Ken/Stuart.

Hi, I'm David and staying in South Africa. I got hold of my Mom's Bernina 117k (70 years old) after she passed away during 2008. The machine did not work for more than 30 years and was stuck. Got it loose and fixed but the motor (Gnome) is not is a very good condition. Between all my dad's stuff I came across a Sew-Tric motor and bracket which I want to use on the machine but it has got no power wire wire and pedal. This motor also has only a 3pin connector at the bottom. One black wire, one red wire and the 3rd pin a black and red wire joined together. I would like to know if someone can give me a wiring diagram for this motor/pedal as these motors are very scares in South Africa. My e-mail adress is willemdj@telkom.co.za. I can mail some pictures if you need to see how the motor looks. Info on the motor: Sew-Tric LTD. British Made. Light trade 1/15H.P. Serial number: 251398.

Thanx

David

Hello Stuart,
Sew tric motors go back as far as the 50's or before and even in the early 60's you could not get a new one,
If I had a 201 in would invest in a new motor and control and wire the light in, I can attach a list of sites if you e-mail.

Ken,

Thanks for your reply.

Definitely has three pins, in a rectangular block.
I've trawled the web for info on Sew-Tric, but it's a bit sparce. Any suggestions where I can look?

And as a fall back, do you know of any good places to get a suitable (original) replacement motor & pedal?

Hope you can help...

Rgds

Hello stuart,
Sew tric motors when they were made had a four pin plug so the two reds were joined together, the two blacks on seperate pins and then earth, I don't ever remember a sew tric having three pins only.
