Can the DVD player component of a machine be replaced?

Hi! The DVD player portion of the combo player has quit working. When a DVD is inserted, it takes a minute and then says "Err".
I opened up the box and removed the DVD component. Is it possible to just replace the DVD playing unit? I hate to have to change the whole thing!

most dvd players are generic parts although i wouldnt garentee it some can be replaced and some cant, most likely cheeper to replace the the whole thing, but it could be a dirty lens or dust under the lens or lens alignment none of which i reccomend undertaking your self as damage normally results, trust me ive tryed
