How do i swap over my speedometer cable on my 92 ford escort?

i have a 92 ford secort 1.4L, speedo cable is dead. I need to replace it but it apears that i'll have to get the dash off first.
I was wondering if there is anyway of exchanging the cable without removing the dash. I can not seem to source any diagrams?

it is impossible to switch out the cable with out removing the dash because the cable is connected to the back of the gauge.
