i recently had the same problem when changing the head gasket so before i took any of the belts off i marked lines on the belts and the cogs .then after taking the belt which goes to the top cog on the rocker i removed the spark plugs and placed a fairly long screw driver in number one plug and turned the crank with a spanner till the screw driver started rising and started to drop again and judged it to as close to it dropping again as possible be carefull though as the screwdriver will get fast so keep checking when the screw rdiver is rising that its free this should give you tdc hope this helps

There are timing marks on one of the teeth on the both the cam timing pulley and the crank pully. The Crank pulley mark should be positioned at 6 o'clock and the cam pulley mark should be lined up with a raised line on the top of the cylinder head. If the cam belt is a genuine renault part there will be a white line on the inside of the belt itself that should be lined up with the crank pulley timing mark. Suggest you get a haynes manual it clearly shows all the marks in there.

i recently did a head gasket on a 1997 renault megane and if it is the same engine there is no timming marks on either the cam sprocket or the crank sprocket so really the only thing you can do is paint a set of marks on prior to cambelt removal
