macdee concealled cistern wont stop running after flush?

This will probably be a problem with the inlet valve or more accurately the washer, firstly you need to remove the cistern lid next check the operation making sure nothing is obstructing the proper working of the flushing mechanism, if not then isolate the water supply and take the whole inlet valve out, this is assuming you haven't got much room and also you're fairly competent. Otherwise it can be done in situ but it will be fiddly, next using a small screwdriver or penknife remove the grey cap which flicks up and off, next remove the float arm which is underneath by pushing the two small arms inwards and then upwards here you can see the inlet hole (clean any scale off this being careful not to damage it). In the arm you will see the tiny rubber washer which is removed by pushing through the small hole above it with a pin, then simply turn it around and push it back, in reverse (this is assuming you don't have a replacement ). Now put it all back in order, turn the water supply back on if you have high water pressure don't open the isolating valve fully.
Check out the operation of the cistern and if you were competent check for leaks.

If your cistern is fitted under a worktop you can still get at it by taking the pannels off you my have to remove the top of the cistern once removed there are3 screws holding the cistern if you lift it up it will then come away it is sitting on a braket take out and you can clean it up and find the problem

Had the same problem trouble is the plumber how done the toilet put a work top on so unable to get at the top to take off the top cover but I turn the down the pressure it seems to work at the moment I pity I did not check how to get at the cistern when the plumber was there seems I will have to remove the sink and disconect
the pipes and unscrew the work top .DOGGGIE PLUMBER.

Same problem as below but I did keep original installation instructions.i quote " Trouble Shooting. To clean the seal(if water is leaking into WC pan),unclip the button assembly and remove cistern lid.twist the main body of valve 1/8th turn anti-clockwise and remove,pull the stem seal off,clean with warm water,then re-fit the cave by re-inserting the 2 lugs and turn 1/8th turn clockwise and refit the cistern lid" hope this is of use.

I twisted the unit to the left and lifted it out, removed the rubber and thoroughly cleaned it and the body of the unit. That fixed the main problem but then I noticed slow run of water coming from the overflow after a few minutes so I turned off the water, removed the flow control valve cleaned it and did many adjustments but it kept on happening. I researched a spare part and found it was discontinued but replaced it with the following from toiletspareparts.com:

Wirquin Jollyfill 1/2" 15mm Plastic Side Entry Inlet Float Valve 16300101

Everything is working properly now but the new valve is a little noisy (I have a mains fed system)

hi there,
my toilet keeps running! it normaly stops by pressing on the flush but it has been happening very often now, so i saw solutions on the internet but the thing is that i have a consealed cistern and even when i take off the exterior metal piece i still cant get to the the main cistern parts.
any ideas?

I had the same problem, was thinking of buying a new cistern but I read related articles on a few different forums and tried one suggestion which was to take the plunger mechanism off the plunger button, undo the screw of the plastic plunger mechanism which will reveal the wire encased in a plastic sheath spray some WD40 onto the wire and let it seep down into the wire caseing work it in by pulling the wire back and forth making sure you don't bend or kink the wire this worked for me P.S I used What stores own lubricant for a £1 saved myself between £15-£20 if I'd bought new cistern parts. HOPE THIS HELPS

Ive just been messing with my macdee cable cistern that sometimes continued flowing after a flush.
my fault was- the inner float rose too high and its locating rod lifted clear of the lower guide hole. The float is on a slider so just hold the blue float and push the white rod down 1 click at a time until on full lift it doesnt dislocate. (im meaning the parts inside the coke can shaped white plastic casing that the flush cable goes into. Getting the top off it is a little tricky, but nothing a hammer couldnt solve. Joke.)

I have also had this problem on two Macdee cisterns and for years have had to resort to pushing the centre float down.
However, I have now discovered HG Professional Limescale Remover, supplied in 500ml bottles. I poured this into the cistern and left it for 22 hours; then flushed and the problem appears to be gone.
The limescale remover is available from Homebase for £4.99.

I have two cisterns which developed this exact fault. There is a float on the discharge assembly which was not dropping fully on the flush. The overrun could be cured by tapping this float down. I added some weight to the float, which fixed the problem. Might be the same fix suggested by J K Cistern guru.

If all else fails ( as in my case ) the only other possible cause is the cable on cable operated systems , have a look in the operating box (push button end ) . Undo the 2 pozidriv screws and check the tiny ball on the end of the cable . IT NEEDS TO SWIVEL AND RETURN FREELY ! If it is even slightly sticky , it will not allow the outlet valve to drop down completely. Slip the outer cable out of its housing and turn the whole cable through 180 degrees it can be removed from the operating arm via the small split. Clean any corrosion from the ball and any residue in the arm and lubricate with a silicon grease or spray or a smear of vaseline . DO NOT use wD40 or ANY oil based lubricants as these are NOT nylon friendly. Check that the return spring is ok and correctly located , replace cover and screws , ensuring outer cable seal is seated properly and operate many times with the outlet valve held vertically until you are sure nothing sticks . QED :)
Hope this might help someone who like me was about to give up and waste another £65 and the time and effort involved in changing the whole cistern or even buying unnecessary parts

You guys are lucky! I'd kill to have a decent cistern supplier out in Romania, where i now live & work. Of the many issues with managing property in romania, among the most annoying is non flushing or weeping cisterns. Even if you change the whole system, the new one you buy is 50/50 likely to be worse. I dont know what it is about their importing rules or lack of QC for good in, but its just about impossible to gaurantee you are buying a good replacement!

We are having a similar problem, but when we flush another toilet in the house, use the dishwasher or washing machine, or the shower, they all cause the offending toilet to flush again. As a previous person said 'HELP'!

Our Macdee concealled cistern started pulsing and overflowing and reflushing did not work. I have reduced the flow by fitting a quarter turn shut off valve in the feed pipe and half closing it, this has the same effect as turning on the basin cold water tap. It makes a lot of noise but is working so far. The pulsing could be caused by the movement of the flexible feed pipe.

1. i have the same problem,we have a macdee concealed cistern where you push a button on the wall and an oval rubber inside the cistern will balloon to push up the flush valve mechanism and water will flush down to the twynford pan, it is a year old now and started leaking.
this is what i notice from the cistern; once the rubber balloon push the flush valve up,and flush water, the flush valve will stay up and will not go down to seal the valve seat, so it will continue leaking, i removed the mechanism and clean it and fix it back, but it still leaking, so i removed again the mechanism, i clean the valve seat rubber and the valve seat and fix it back but still it is leaking, again i removed the mechanism, i readjust the height of the rubber balloon (the rubber was attached to a plastic holder where you can adjust the rubber either up or down-beware of the lock, there's one down and two up) return the mechanism back to the valve holder and fill water but still it is leaking, i notice that the flush valve which is fix to the valve seat holder( by turning the flush valve clockwise and there's one lock each side) is moving slightly, i suspect that it is one of the problem, i will try to find a complete flush valve mechanism change the old mechanism, if the leaking stop, fine but if the leaking persist, i have to remove the valve seat holder, the problem is, the cistern is inside the concrete wall and i have to break the wall in order to remove the cistern (next time i will use jacob delafon servo system) by the way, i am a plumbing technician with more than 20 years experience.

i find a few problems with these pieces of crap cisterns number 1 is that if the flush pipe is inserted too far into the cistern the valve does not close properly and will continously flush
Number two the valve does not always slide back down correctly,thus not sealing the water in the cistern.
Number 3 The air push buttons are rubbish.

Number 4 the gland sealing ring on the toilet end of the flush pipe do not seel properly basically are not fit for purpose
Number 5 2 out of 5 of these shit cisterns have one or more of the above problems

routing"I cured problem by wrapping heavy lead solder wire around top surface of flap valve.This causes valve to close with sharper action.

I too have the same problem with the siphon occasionally not closing after flushing. In my case I wonder if it is because I'm using recyled rain water which has tiny particles in it (despite a good filter). This is a real problem if not noticed as the toilet just continues to allow water to flow into the pan ad infinitum wasting all my carefuilly recycled water. I've phoned the technical support number below and left a message. I'll report back when I get them to phone me back :-)

My cistern was dripping, it is relatively new too, so I switched off the water, took the candle part to pieces and just wiped around the rubber seals and am hoping it now works. I'm wondering whether the problem is made worse when you put the toilet cleaning tablets in the tank.

Another issue was main mechanism would sometimes get stuck open on a full flush, I've lubricated the cable and seeing if that fixes it.

Hi there, I just had the same problem, toilet keeps running after a flush for some time (or constantly):

Turn off the cistern water supply (with a screw driver on the valve on the pipes nearby, or turn the handle. Fit a new inlet valve (Homebase/B&Q/Wickes all have them around £8 to £12 each). Very easy to fit, with clear instructions. Consider myself a bit of a plumber now!! (Make sure you turn the water supply back on, and tighten the nut connecting it to the cistern well!).

Very easy. Job done. Doesn't take a genius to fix and saves £££ on a plumber callout. Good luck.

I have found that the 'pump' get dry after a few years and the friction stops it returning; this leaves the bellows inflated and water continues to syphon across. Take the pump apart, clean and spray with Rubber/Nylon lubricant (Halfords) and reassemble. Fine!

I have had similar problems. However, I have to admit that the service from the company involved has been absolutely brilliant. I spoke with a lady called Caroline on the number provided by Sutty and their approach and service as surprised me. I am a Management Consultant and I can say that I have not experienced such a good approach and service for a long long time from a company.

So pleased I found this little forum. I took the inlet valve mechanism out, stripped it, cleaned it, forgot how it went back together, spent 10 minutes working it out and put it all back.

Problem solved. Essentially the rubber seals get clogged up with scum (taken about 2 years to get to this stage). You don't need new parts just take it out, dismantle, clean, reassemble and jobs a good un.

Fixed it. Took apart inlet valve assembly - it was clogged with a thin layer of scum. Washed it all out with warm water and put back together. It works fine now. We think that the scum was lowering the water pressure going into the cistern hence not fully shutting the inlet valve when the cistern was full.

We have the same problem. Once we flush the toilet it fills up as normal except it does not stop and continues to spill via the overflow back into the pan. The only way we can get it to stop is by running the tap in the sink beside the toilet for a couple of minutes until the dripping stops. Is there any way of solving this other than replacing the entire assembly???. Its been driving us crazy for over a month now

Hi, did you manage to solve the problem because my system is playing up too! I've cleaned the washers, stripped it down and still the valve won't shut off the water supply...continually drips until it goes over the overflow. Ahhh
