Mend Briggs & Stratton Problem Engine

McCulloch 3540P oil problem?

I have a McCulloch 3540P mower with Briggs & Stratton engine which hasn't been used for about 9 months. Does it need oil in the fuel? Why is it spewing out white smoke when it runs? If there is an oil leak, how can I mend it?

Thanks Phil. Had a good look and discovered that the previous owner had been using car engine oil instead of the lighter grade needed in a mower engine !!

No oil in the fuel. Oil in the crankcase - there is a separate oil filler. Depending on model, there is either a dipstick on the filler, or if the filler is at the base of the engine, fill it too the top. The smoke is probably oil in the muffler - particularly if it has been stored in any position other than upright. Check the oil, then start it and allow it to run until the smoke stops. May be 5 mins or so.
