how do i know if my battery is not working properly?

You don't add anything to car batteries these days - with the exception of distilled water on the rare occasion that its necessary (or even possible). You need to fit a new battery, and then use a test meter to check for over charging once the engine is running again. Expect to see around 14.2 volts with the engine running.
