How do I get the pull-cord to rewind on my Homelite trimmer?

The pull-cord jammed and as I cotinued pulling it unwound to the point that the spring did not recoil.

It sound like the recoil spring is either broken or maybe jambed-or the copper tube may have been worn to a place that the cord could be hung up.
