Mend Ford Mondeo Up Itself

Ford Mondeo diesel keeps revving up by itself?

I have a P reg 1.8 Diesel TD Mondeo and the engine keeps revving up by itself.
Not when I'm driving. usually when I'm sitting in traffic
If I leave the engin running and let it sit in my drive every 2 or 3 minutes it gives a strong rev then settles down for another 2 or 3 mins and does the same. It tends to smoke a lot when it does this. blueish coloured smoke.
Can anyone tell me the possible cause
I've changed oil and all filters including air filter but that hasnt helped

Mike B in answer to this you are not correct, Bluish smoke is usually associated to burning of Oil. Tha meaning oil entering into the fule and air mixture and being burnt in the combustion chamber. White smoke is associated to water in the oil and a dead give away to head basket problem is low compression and the water in the expansion tank appearing to be grey or the oil itself being grey. As for the the revving probs i also have this after changing the pipe that runs from the front to the side of the Turbo charger on the manifold.

Firstly many thanks to all the contributors on this site.

I had this problem with a 1.8 Mondeo turbo diesel - 1998 R reg, and it is now fixed!

I tried disconnecting the ECU, and inspecting the injector spill off pipes (suggestions from anthony and jessiejames). However, what fixed it was basically the reply from john (oct 2008) so thanks very much.
I suggest that you take the charge air cooler off and if there is any diesel fuel in that, it’s a good bet that the diaphragm has gone and the diesel is being sucked up the vacuum tube. (Anything with the CAV Roto Diesel pump may have this).

Thanks Antony.
I just sorted out the same prob on my Transit thanks to you. Tiny leak where the pipe goes back into the pump.

Hello, amazing i had exactly the same problem on my p reg 1.8TD mondeo. I was given loads of advice about faulty pumps, lamda sensors etc, then i went to a grizzly old backstreet mechanic who told me to check the injector spill off pipes ( three rubber pipes that connect each injector in line to a common return) they were rotten and leaking! I got a set of replacement pipes from Mill autos for about £3. It has completely fixed it.
Apparently because they were leaking air was also leaking in and causing the problem.
Have a quick look while the engine is running.
Good luck

I had a close look at the injector pump and if you look at it from the front of the car just right of centre you will see a small round bit sticking out with a metal cover over it, prise this off and undo the three torx screws holding the top on ( make a note of the spring !! ). In there you will see the diaphram, i was lucky enough to be able to take one off a car i am parting out that i knew was good. Since i swapped it, no problems ... so far. The part can't be more than a few quid and i would guess any diesel pump specialist could get one

if you remove the battery negative then reconnect it then engine at fast idle for ten minutes it will resest the ecu as ford self learn

Hi, had this problem with mine. The bladder on the fuel idle regulator is shot. So when you idle fuel builds up and the excess releases on a gear change, usually from idle to 1st. I had this replaces and problem solved.

hi dale,

we shall not talk about blueish smoke since that usually indicates water getting into your oil or a head gasket problem to you or me!
the problem with the reving is usually the computer in your car, it tells the automatic choke to rev the car to keep the engine ticking over basically its had a fright one day and it revs now to stop the engine from stalling when ticking over.
best way to sort it is take your car for a diagnostics check (40quid) and these guys will reset your cars computer back to factory settings.... reving will stop

hope this helps
