how do i diagnose an oven fault?

i tried to turn the heat up in my oven, but, even with the knob turned fully up the flame was still small. it is a cannon oakley cooker.

This sounds like a thermostat fault, as the cooker thinks that the oven is already at temperature so it keeps the flame just ticking over.
