What should a Defy automaid 600 pump filter look like?

I recently bought a Defy automaid 600 and as instructed went to clean out my filter after about 35 washes, to my surprise the "thing" I removed after following the instruction manual was not a filter but just a plug (no wire mesh or plastic filter with holes) not what you'd expect to find as a "filter". This was just a plastic screw plate with a 1inch shaft and a conical plastic circle about 2cm radius... Surly there is something missing, because there is nothing here for any dirt/coins/hair to be trapped by??
Am I missing a part?
