Mend White Westinghouse 1777 Sewing Machine Needle Foot Pedal

Why will the needle not engage on my new machine?

I have a new White Westinghouse sewing machine (model 1777). the Foot pedal will not engage the needle and when you use the hand wheel it is very tight, will barely engage the needle.

Hello Laura,
It sounds like there may be a small piece of thread stuck in the machine at the bobbin case, force the balance wheel backwards and you may be able to free it off, when you press on the foot control do you get a buzzing noise from the motor?
