thank you for sharing - I have a VW Polo T 1999 both my drivers and passenger windows don't work, is there anything I try doing before having to take it to a garage and paying out a small fortune? Plus anyone know where I can get an VW emblem badge as someone has stolen mine

2001 1.4tdi, had both windows pack up, the door cables had cracked insulation but not broken, tested switches and found drivers u/s, replaced and now works fine, passenger side is clicking but seems to be jammed so will try spraying with lube, not sure quite where to spray it but will try taking end cover off(4 screws)

i had same touble ,it was clicking so i new there was power to it ,i took off panel and sprayed the runners with lube spray ,it now works fine, you have to pop off the bottom of panel (dont panic they will pop back on) remove the casing carefully from door handle to expose two fixing screws then lift off panel there might also be a small grub screw at the top right of panel dont forget what order you take it all off ,good luck.

Does the central locking work off the lock in that door? If not....Open the drivers door, and you'll see a black flexi coupling from the hinge post to the door. Pull back the rubber sheath from the hinge post end and you may find a black/white wire broken....that's a likely problem to look for.

I had a problem with my window, and had to help it up and down. After spraying the edges of the widow and rubber seals with LOADS of silicon spray it worked a treat! Hope it's something simple like that.

Just repaired the same problem and it was the two wires that come through the door. Pull back the black rubber wire cover to check if one or both of the wires are broken. If not then the problem is internal but the wires are an easy starting point.

I've got the same problem but mine sticks because the plastic guide on one side has broken off this can be found with the door panel off apparently this is a common fault and a kit can be bought consisting of two guides pulleys cable and regulator. On some models the guides have been changed to metal.
Good luck fitting it as its tricky.

I had exactly the same problem. Start the engine and let it idle then try and do the window can you hear the engine labor? if so sounds like the motor is stuck.

What you need to do, there are 4 allen key screws on the motor housing, mark the side of the housing with a pen or somthing then remove the four screws / bolts on the housing then remove it.

Now get a can of WD40 and give the motor a generous spraying. Start spinning the motor by hand now, this should feel quite stiff, do it a few times each way until you are happy.

Now put the housing back on noting the mark you made and the side it went (most likely facing you) and put the bolts back in and test it before you put the door card back on.
