i have a noise from the top of the engine and think it my be the hydraulic tappets.does anybody know the best way to check them and how to remove them if necassary.
5 / 40 oil is what you need, i had same sort of tapping noise in my mk 5, 2000 plate 1.25 zetec s fiesta. Get it checked out professionally asap, because i didnt and it was the big end bearing that was making the noise. Consider that a write off! :)

You must insure that the correct grade of oil is being used 5w/30 if the enging is a zetec
