My husband plugged the hole of the toilet with a ball inside of a sock and then poured about a 1/4 - 1/2 gallon of vinegar and fill the toilet bowl up with water from a bucket. Close the lid and let it soak, then use a toilet brush and clean again. You can also soak shower heads in the vinegar mixture to clean out the small holes and use an old toothbrush to clean after soaking. The main key is to let it soak as long as possible and then rinse all things cleaned with vinegar well. Hope this helps you and you find this useful.
When my husband & I clean our aquarium filtration system(not the charcoal bags or foam filter obviously those we spray with outside garden hose), and the glass top of tank and the tubing for the filter system. We use vinegar about a 1/2 gallon. And then let it soak for a few hours. Come back later and wipe lime build up off, use brushes to clean insides of tubes. My husband puts on a cotton glove to wipe the lime off the glass and filter system, so as not to scratch it.

Don't put acid down...it may do the surface a nasty injury....also not good for the environment! I bought a pair of heavy duty marigold gloves, a couple of pan scrubbers and some Vim (or whatever the EU insist it's called these days!) and scrubbed it. It was surprisingly easy, even round the bend. Don't but the metal scrubbers, cos they'll scratch the surface, use the nylon ones...it worked for me. A fun way to spend a Sunday morning!. Enjoy it.
