Audio works well. Video portion has a herringbone image. How can I fix it?

First check quality of connecting cable. Use individually screened cables. Cheap cables can cause poor results.

Also, check that both the DVD's video output setting and TV's video input settings are of the same type.
A mismatch of Composite Video to S-VHS may cause symptoms similar to those you described and/or no colour.

It won't be a faulty laser.
