David,
I also have a Stihl chainsaw with a broken starter rope. In your response to Bob's question you said that if you knew the model # it would be easier to give step by step instructions. I'd be very grateful if you would give me a step by step for my Stihl 025 chainsaw. Thanks.

Hi there, I found this link which was pretty helpful on teacher tube.
If I knew the model it would be easier to give you step by step. But first remove your starter housing from the saw. Nothing is going to jump out at you. Once you have done this you will see (usually Orange) and starter Pawl or 2 held on the center pin with a clip. Looks like a hitch pin almost or a double depending on model. Move this remembering how these came off. Some saws have a gaurd around the rope area so do not. If it doesn't then you don't need to do this part. Just remove your old rope and get enough rope to fill the rewind coil to top edge but not past as it will jump off. To adjust the tension of the rope when in stored position. Simply pull the starte rope after you have tied it to the handle and then hold the rewind and wrap the rope around it until it has some tension when in the stored position.
