There is an internal switch in the machine that stops the brushbar rotating when the machine is upright (to stop the brushbar running on the same piece of carpet while using the hose). Once the machine is reclined for use (when the rear stand pops up) the brushbar should start and stay running until the machine is either returned upright or the brushbar button is pushed to turn it off.
